About DOM4SEHAT

Exploring the Marine Ecosystems for Novel Bioresources with Human Health and Industrial Significance

Deep Ocean Mission (DOM) Ministry of Earth Sciences, Govt. of India Led by BRIC-ILS Bhubaneswar

Exploring the Marine Ecosystems for Novel Bioresources with Human Health and Industrial Significance — is a Deep Ocean Mission (DOM), Ministry of Earth Sciences initiative led by BRIC–Institute of Life Sciences (ILS), Bhubaneswar, in collaboration with NCCS Pune, ICGEB New Delhi, IBSD Imphal, IIT Bhubaneswar, KIIT, and IISER Berhampur, with support from NIOT, NCCR, CMLRE, and regional universities.

The project aims to explore, characterize, and harness marine microbial biodiversity across Odisha’s coastal ecosystems, including Bhitarkanika, Chilika, and associated estuaries, as well as the wider deep ocean. Through an integrated multi-omics approach encompassing metagenomics, metabarcoding, whole-genome sequencing, metabolomics, and advanced bioinformatics, DOM4SEHAT seeks to build a comprehensive marine genomic and metabolite knowledge base and uncover the functional and biotechnological potential of marine microorganisms.

The programme encompasses marine biodiversity exploration, next-generation sequencing and AI/ML-driven bioinformatics, high-throughput bioprospecting of therapeutically significant natural products such as anticancer, antiviral, and immunomodulatory compounds, and the discovery of industrially valuable enzymes, nutraceuticals, probiotics, and other marine bioresources, supported by a dedicated Marine Bioinformatics Facility.

Integrated Multi-Omics

Metagenomics, metabarcoding, whole-genome sequencing (WGS), and metabolomics building a unified genomic and metabolite knowledge base.

Therapeutics Discovery

High-throughput bioprospecting for novel anticancer, antiviral, and immunomodulatory bioactive compounds from deep ocean and coastal strains.

Industrial Bioresources

Discovery and characterization of industrial enzymes, biocatalysts, functional nutraceuticals, probiotics, and high-value marine bio-innovations.

AI/ML & Data Hub

Supported by a dedicated Marine Bioinformatics Facility deploying next-gen AI/ML tools for predictive annotation and genome mining.

Translational Impact & National Vision: Viksit Bharat @2047

By connecting marine biodiversity with biotechnology and translational research, DOM4SEHAT aims to advance the discovery of novel drug candidates, industrial biocatalysts, nutraceuticals, and other high-value products, while establishing integrated marine multi-omics data infrastructure, strengthening India’s marine biotechnology capabilities, supporting the Blue Economy, and contributing to the national vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.
